Lifetime of Words

As you get older,
do the words grow colder?
what once came pouring out
now I'm lucky if I get the odd spout
looking back, it makes me feel proud
I wish my inspiration now could be so loud
The words would form beautiful patterns
Now I search for them like hidden treasure
Locked somewhere deep beneath
It's like to unlock them would be a forbidden sin
Come out, Come out, wherever you are
Wherever you are, surely you can't be far?

New Year's Eve

Reluctantly opening my eyes
Dare I lift the cover yet?
The room is spinning
I hope this is the worst it will get

As the day goes on
Fragments of memories of last night return in a haze
No wonder my heads in a daze

Drinking that old friend Rum and Coke,
Getting kissed on the cheek by some bloke
Dancing to soul and motown
In a packed room, getting down

Going home
catching the end of Jool's Holland Hootenanny
feeling like my head's full of foam
setting the smoke alarm with cremated toast

welcome to two thousand and thirteen
it certainly started full of win
even though today I just want to sleep
I'm happy to have some drunken fun memories to keep

Happy new year everyone
I hope your hangover isn't as bad as mine
but I'm sure this year will be mighty fine.

A Rather Inspired weekend

3 poems written this weekend!

on friday...(19/10/12)
a small wish

I need the words back
the words I used to know
please bring them back to me
so holy and free
please help me to see
what's right in front of me
it's there all along
just learn the words to the song
beautiful words
where have you been
it's been so long
there's still more
it's hidden at the core
your base core
needs to identify
needs to verify
pen to paper
let it flow
let it go, let it out
you know it's in there
just set it free

Goddess

Breathe in, Breathe out
Goddess in, Goddess out
within and without
round and about
the Goddess breathes as we do
In and out
inside out, upside down
it doesn't matter which way we look
you won't find her presence in a book
she's in you, she's around you
searching your soul
making you whole.

Breathe in, Breathe out
Goddess in, Goddess out
Let's not forget our connection
as we search for the answers
to our soul seeking questions
she is I, and she is you
she is the sky, she is the sea
she is the spirit inside of me

come, won't you see
this mystical union is free
Goddess in, Goddess out,
I have no doubt.

Sunday (21/10/12)- Inspiration
Standing at the pearly gates
but this isn't Heaven
this is the blank, blank sheet
staring at me, teasing me
waiting for me to fill it
with juicy words
perhaps even men with swords
fairies, angels, vampires or even just ordinary people
waiting for me to direct their narrative

But I'm struggling to open the gate
and the page remains white
no words seem quite right
the lines blur
as thoughts start to occur
letters begin to form
and a new life is born.

The gate has been unlocked
and all I had to do is knock
the words have returned
like a long lost friend
what was once broken, is now on the mend
welcome back
I promise this time, I won't give you the sack.

Wake up and smell the coffee

Wake up and smell the coffee
you aren't as sweet as toffee
it's all in your head
what they said
you took it upon yourself to take it the wrong way
didn't listen to the words they say
never giving their opinions the light of day

isn't it time
you stopped this mime
realised that you've commited a moral crime?
smell the coffee
stop being so bossy
lighten up
and join the club

Stop and Stare

We have no time to stand and stare
Life is busy and hectic
No time to stop and care.

Eat, Work, Sleep
24 hours goes past in a blur
Leaving you in a shattered heap
then the cycle starts again
Eat, Work, Sleep.

No time to work on that tan
Money makes the world go round
or so some people say
Forever in that same old circle, bound.

But if we never stop
what do we miss?
Singing and dancing to Blitzkrieg Bop?
The lust and passion of that great kiss?

Break the cycle
Get on that bicycle
Stop and explore
Don't just ignore
Life is beautiful
so take the time to stop and stare.

Dancing Barefoot Issue Three is now out!

I wrote issue 3 of my perzine Dancing Barefoot back in October but due to 'technical issues' have only just been able to release it.
This particular issue is pretty deep and personal, as I write about my pagan path, and my experiences of death and endings.
You can buy or swap a printed copy for £1- email me for details on how to pay moonlight.phoenix@gmail.com or you can get a free PDF version- just email me and let me know if you want this.
You can still get Issues 1 and 2 in the above ways also-
Issue 1 is about friendships and growing up
Issue 2 is about organising a Ladyfest and whether being a loner can be a positive thing!

Ode to Patti Smith

Patti Smith
your songs touch my soul
the tortured poet
the heroine of lyrical content
your songs can make the moment seem more real
dancing barefoot to rock n roll nigger
you never fail to leave an impression
you're a goddess
and the godmother of punk
I dream of sharing your vision
and meeting your muse
in my own words
Patti, you are golden
like the sun
keep writing
and keep inspiring
as your words could never grow cold.

note in a little box

you saved me
said the note in a little box
no more watching the clock
because of you I no longer feel blue
ever word is true
said the note in a little box
I'll keep it in my pocket
whenever I need a positive rocket
it doesn't matter who it's from
just knowing someone wrote it, makes me feel less glum
note in a little box
positive vibes encased
my heart embraced

I am Pagan

At first everyone thought it was just a phase
that I'd soon grow out of it
I was just a teenager
fascinated by the promise of magic and spells

But as time wore on,
I didn't stop reading
every aspect of my life became affected

my choices became clearer
and now I had beliefs I held much dearer

I never even knew I had a faith
but when I discovered paganism
I knew I had been one all along

over the years
things have changed
sometimes I've neglected it, other times I've worked so hard on it,
but still the same
it always remains

the premise for me is so simple
"do what you will but harm none"
respecting the earth
and keeping in mind the power of three times three
all these years later I can't think of anything I'd rather be

my whole life this has been who I am
I am a pagan
and I am proud.

Tired

I'm so tired
I've forgotten what it's like to be wired
it's not that I don't sleep
just that my emotions run deep
life recently has been hard
and I want to give it the red card

life is a funny thing
there's been times I want to sing
but then another day, another week, another year
all I can do is shed a tear

wishing things could be simple
like love and friendship would always run smoothly
like there would never be problems with work
and the house always would stay clean
and money would never be mean

but that wouldn't be life would it
you can't always make it fit

I am so tired
wake me up when the party's over...

A Love Letter to the Library

There's one place that apart from the places I've lived
that has always been there for me
through thick and thin
when I've felt alone
when I've needed to get away
a place where I can learn
a place where I can fantasise
about forgotten lands and magic spells
a place of quiet
a place of tranquility
filled with words
and filled with pages
even music and dvds..
and it barely costs a thing
everytime I leave with a pile of new books to read
much more satisfying than a shopping mall
Libraries, you make the world a better place..

January

Oh January
you and I have a turbulent relationship
you always make promises you can't keep
and I get so overexcited I can barely sleep
making plans in my head
if I did them all I'd probably fall dead

you always let me down
with a frown
you give me hope, you can give me dreams
then you rip them up at the seams
you pull the carpet from beneath my feet
and knock right off my self righteous seat

you make me ill, you give me stress
and I always end up in a mess
yet you know I'll be fooled again
and I'll feel like I'm stuck in the rain
but it takes sunshine AND rain to make a rainbow
so I'll see you through
and wait for the sun to emerge

Keys

The keys lie on the table
Shiny and silver
cold to the touch
opening new experiences
going through unknown doors
seeing the world like you've never seen it before
feeling at one with yourself and all around you
when I pick them up they jangle
the smell of freshly fallen rain
as I walk through the door
my keys turn the lock
and then I place them back on the table
where they sit
reflecting my image
reflecting my self

I Miss You

Sadness tears up apart
Every day I feel the sorrow grow deeper in my heart
somehow it eclipses all the good times we've had
at first it seemed like just a fad
but then it just got worse and worse
like some sort of curse
this beautiful person who cares, and who dares
came into my life and made everything right
now it seems all you have is strife
and just to see you at all is a fight
I felt like our friendship was true
but lately the more I try, the more I feel blue.

Feminist Reclaimed

I stand up for my right to choose
I am a feminist
I stand up for equal pay
I am a feminist
I stand up against discrimination
I am a feminist
I stand up against sexual violence

I am a feminist and proud
I'll shout it loud
No, I don't hate men
I'll politicize adverts with my pen
No, I've never burned a bra
I'll spread the message far
It's time to reclaim 'feminist'
and dispel the myth

Stereotype and other things

I am not your stereotype
I refuse pink and flowers
Yes I am a girl
I don't have to be pretty
I don't have to be a mother
if I choose not to be

I am not your stereotype
I refuse make up and pedicures
Yes I am a girl
I don't have to be obessed with my appearence
I don't have to spend my money
on clothes and lipstick if I choose not to

I am not your stereotype
I refuse to conform to what you expect of me
It's all the brainwashing media you see
I can be who I want to be
I am a grrrl.

Essex Poetry Festival is running a competition and I'm wondering whether to enter. There are money prizes and the chance to read the poems at the festival (which I would find very difficult) I can enter one poem or 4 poems. What do you think- should I enter even though I'm really shy- and if I enter what poem/poems should I enter?

Time

Where does the time go?
A day, a month, a year what I thought was yesterday
was more like last year
one minute it's Monday
and in a blink of an eye it's Sunday again

where does the time go?
does it disappear into my head?
or I am just dreaming
a future I haven't had

you say
what have you been up to?
I say
oh not that much
But it must have been something
for it to be this late
time has made the great escape
away from my grasp
slipping through my fingertips
like sand
I hope you understand
I never want to be too late
to hold your hand
I just don't know where the time goes
I can't touch time
but I don't know how to make it mine.

Plenty of Fish in the Sea

Plenty of fish in the sea
Plenty of trees in the forests
Plenty of cows
Plenty of pigs
Plenty of chickens
plenty of animals to go around
Of course they're gonna last
when their dying to fill my plate
of course the trees are gonna last
when we keep chopping them down
The Earth will keep turning
while we choose to keep burning
fuels that cause pollution
what makes you think there's another solution?
I don't have to care
what happens to the bears
I'll be happy on my three piece leather sofa
watching my ninety inch plasma television
after all
there's plenty of fish in the sea

In the Sky

He hid his face amid a crowd of stars
and placed his feet just behind the planet mars
he wished not to see
didn't want to know what was down below
the sky was his refuge
a shelter from the Earth's corruption
here in the solar system there's no disruption
just purity and beauty
no need to escape
just sit and dream
and watch the night float by

first line from the beautiful poem When you are Old by W.B Yeats

Magnetic Poetry Part 2

Don't say that now
you and I lie awake
while she's there
if this has to be the way
I don't wanna see the light
we're phoney
there is nothing in the night
take down your crossfire
it was a long way off
it got out of hand
guess I must just live now
and there's a hurricane of bleakness
baby you got worse
a deaf kiss plays us out
